A wedding that hasn't been officially announced has already triggered a public fight.

Reports have been circulating for days that composer Anirudh Ravichander and Kavya Maran, daughter of Sun Group chairman Kalanithi Maran, will marry in Barcelona on November 9. Neither family has confirmed the date or the venue. What has been confirmed, going by an Instagram video actor Gopi Kannadasan put out on Friday, is that at least one prominent Tamil film family isn't happy about the match.

Gopi Kannadasan is the son of legendary lyricist Kannadasan. In the video, reported first by Filmibeat Tamil, he tells Anirudh directly not to marry into the family, framing his objection as a warning rather than a wish. He says it's usually considered inauspicious to speak ill of someone at their wedding, but goes ahead anyway, calling the Maran household a family that ties the wedding thread even during Rahu Kalam, a period many Hindus treat as inauspicious for major rituals. He goes further, alleging the family rejects the existence of god altogether and, in his words, doesn't stop at rejecting Hindu gods specifically.

The sharper allegations come next. Kannadasan claims the family, going back to Kavya Maran's grandfather Murasoli Maran and her granduncle, the late DMK patriarch Karunanidhi, has spent decades misleading Tamil people about its wealth. He alleges the family arrived in Chennai with nothing and is now among the world's richest, and claims that unlike business houses such as Reliance or TVS, the Maran family's fortune wasn't built through labour. He also brings up the online abuse Kavya Maran received when her IPL franchise lost a match, suggesting it reflects how little regard the public actually has for the family behind the curated image.

None of this is independently verified. It's one actor's account, delivered in a social media video, aimed at a family that hasn't responded publicly as of Friday afternoon. Anirudh, Kavya Maran and the Sun Group have made no statement addressing either the wedding reports or Kannadasan's remarks.

What's clear is that the story has stopped being about a wedding date. Kannadasan's video mixes religious commentary, unproven claims about the family's finances and a reference to old IPL-season trolling, all inside two minutes. Whether the Maran family or Anirudh responds, and whether the November 9 date holds up at all, remains to be seen. For now, the loudest voice in this story belongs to someone who isn't part of either family.
