Five weeks in, and Hanuman Ansh is still doing the thing nobody expected it to keep doing.

On its 33rd day in theatres, Tuesday, September 8, the Neem Karoli Baba drama earned close to Rs 7.51 crore across 6,322 tracked shows till 7 PM, per figures reported by trade outlet Koimoi. That works out to a per-show average of roughly Rs 11,879.

Compare that to Mirzapur: The Movie. Excel Entertainment's crime spectacle is only five days old, sitting on its first Tuesday, and it pulled in Rs 8.46 crore during the same window, across 8,015 shows. Bigger number sure. But the per-show average comes to about Rs 10,555, which puts it roughly Rs 1,324 behind Hanuman Ansh on a show-by-show basis.

That's the whole story here, and it's a strange one. A film in its fifth week, running on nearly 1,700 fewer shows than the fresh release it's being measured against, is still squeezing more out of each screening. Mirzapur wins on total collection because it's on more screens, full stop. That's what a wide release does. But per-show efficiency is the number distributors and exhibitors actually watch when they're deciding whether to hold a screen or hand it to something else, and on that metric Hanuman Ansh isn't just hanging on, it's ahead.

There's no single explanation for a run like this beyond the obvious one, word of mouth. The film has been polarising online, some viewers calling it exactly the kind of devotional drama Bollywood doesn't make with any conviction anymore, others less convinced. What isn't in dispute is that whatever crowd is showing up keeps showing up, weekday after weekday, five weeks after release. That's not how sleeper hits usually behave past week three. They fade. This one hasn't.

Whether that holds is the real question now. Hanuman Ansh's sixth weekend lands in a few days, right as Mirzapur: The Movie tries to build its own opening-week momentum with a full slate of shows behind it. If the devotional drama's per-show number stays ahead into a second month, distributors will start treating it less like a curiosity and more like a case study. Trade watchers will be checking Friday's numbers first.
