HBO has confirmed the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon for 2028, with production set to begin in 2027, closing out a show that just wrapped a third season still generating serious streaming numbers.
It's the clearest piece of news to come out of what's otherwise been a victory lap for the Thrones franchise. Collider reported that the original Game of Thrones, more than six years since its finale aired, remains among HBO's most-streamed titles in over 25 countries. That's a big claim and it comes from Collider's own reporting rather than any official viewership release from HBO, so take the specific number with a pinch of salt. But the broader point tracks. The show that ended on a note plenty of fans still argue about hasn't lost its grip on watchlists.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO's other 2026 entry into the world of Westeros, took a different approach entirely. Where the mothership sprawled across seven seasons and a continent, this one plants itself at a minor jousting tournament and follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg over the course of a few days. Small canvas, same universe. It worked well enough that HBO is treating it as part of the same hot streak that's carried House of the Dragon and, before that, the flagship show itself.
