Insidious: Out of the Further has quietly become the franchise's comeback story nobody expected in August.

The film crossed $150 million worldwide within a fortnight of release, making it the fourth-highest earner in the series so far. It's still climbing. According to Box Office Mojo figures reported by Koimoi, the film's worldwide tally now stands at $156.2 million, less than $6 million short of the $161.9 million lifetime haul that Insidious: Chapter 2 racked up. If it clears that mark, Out of the Further slots into the franchise's all-time top three, pushing Chapter 2 down a rung.

Domestically, the numbers tell a steadier story than the opening weekend suggested. The Jacob Chase-directed sequel opened to $25.1 million in North America, a number some read as soft for the franchise. Twenty-six days in, its domestic total sits at $61.3 million, including $435,000 from its fourth Tuesday in theatres, a drop of just 36 percent week over week. That's a healthy hold for a horror title well past its first weekend.

What's kept the film from being written off as a disappointment is the budget. Out of the Further was made cheap, and against that spend, even a middling worldwide run counts as a clear financial win for Sony. Reviews for the film have been mixed at best, and the box office hasn't matched the openings of the franchise's biggest entries, but neither factor has stopped it from turning a profit and building toward franchise-record territory.

The film brings back Lin Shaye in her recurring role from earlier instalments while introducing a mostly new cast around her, a choice that's kept the series' mythology intact without leaning entirely on its original ensemble. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, who anchored Chapter 2, aren't part of this outing.

Tracking suggests Out of the Further could finish its theatrical run anywhere between $170 million and $190 million worldwide, per Koimoi's reporting. Where in that range it lands will decide how comfortably it clears Chapter 2 and how close it gets to the franchise's top two, both of which remain well ahead for now.

For a series that's had its share of diminishing returns, that's not a bad place to be sitting five weeks out from release. The next few weekends, particularly how it performs against fresh competition through late September, will settle exactly where Out of the Further ends up on the franchise's all-time list.
