Jailer 2 Trailer Splits Fans, Still Eyes Kollywood Record

Rajinikanth's sequel drew a lukewarm trailer response on social media but trade estimates still peg its opening day at 66 to 69 crore net, enough to top Coolie's record.

The Jailer 2 trailer went up on October 5, and the internet isn't exactly unanimous. Rajinikanth looks every bit the powerhouse he's built a career on, but a fair chunk of the reaction online has been lukewarm at best, with viewers pointing out that the footage feels like a rerun of the first film's trailer beats.

And yet, none of that seems to be denting trade confidence. Industry trackers quoted by Koimoi are still projecting an opening day haul of 66 to 69 crore net in India, which would push Jailer 2 past Coolie's 65 crore mark to become the biggest Kollywood opener the country has seen.

That's a big claim to make off a trailer that, by the trade's own admission, missed the X-factor the first one had. But the case for a record start doesn't rest on the trailer alone.

Rajinikanth's pull is the baseline. Add to that a sequel riding on genuine goodwill from the original Jailer, director Nelson's growing reputation in the Tamil market, and a cast stacked with names built for pan-India appeal, and the arithmetic starts to make sense even with a middling trailer cut.

The glimpse of Mohanlal has already got Kerala talking, and the silhouette reveal of Hrithik Roshan, kept deliberately vague, is doing its job of pulling Hindi-market eyeballs toward a film that otherwise wouldn't need the help. Fans online have been split on how much that cameo is actually worth, with some keeping expectations low until they see more than an outline on screen.

Sun Pictures has mounted this one big. Reports peg the budget at 350 crore, and the cast list beyond Rajinikanth reads like an ensemble built for scale, SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan and Vidya Balan all in key roles alongside Mohanlal and Hrithik Roshan's cameos.

The trailer's reception also hasn't stopped the film's music from working overtime. Anirudh's soundtrack has reportedly crossed 100 million streams and entered Spotify's club tier, numbers that suggest the songs are doing the promotional heavy lifting the trailer arguably didn't.

Whether a shaky trailer actually dents walk-ins on October 15 is the real test. Trailers have burned films before, Jailer's own promo wasn't universally loved either and that film still turned into one of 2023's biggest Tamil hits. The template exists. The question is whether Jailer 2 can repeat it at a scale that beats Coolie's number outright.

Sun Pictures hasn't responded publicly to the trailer chatter, and there's no word yet on whether a second trailer or additional promotional push is planned before release. October 15 will settle the argument either way.
