Jalen Brunson is trading the point guard spot for a squad badge, at least for one episode. NBC announced on Thursday that the New York Knicks captain will guest star on Law & Order: SVU this fall, landing in the season's fifth episode, which is set to air November 5.

The announcement came via an Instagram post from NBC that leaned into the bit. It opened with a clip of Brunson walking down a hallway telling a crowd, "Try to get on SVU," captioned "How It Started." Swipe once and there's Brunson on set, badge on his chest, flanked by the show's crew and its longest-running star, Mariska Hargitay, who has played Olivia Benson for 27 years now.

"When the plans finally make it out of the group chat," NBC wrote in its caption, confirming Brunson was "officially headed to SVU."

What exactly he's playing has not been revealed. The badge in the photo is the kind SVU regulars wear when they're cast as cops, so expect Brunson behind a desk at the precinct rather than on the wrong side of an interrogation, though NBC hasn't spelled that out either.

This isn't a cold open for the Brunson-Hargitay friendship. She was courtside for Game 4 of the NBA Finals when the Knicks clawed back from 29 points down to beat the San Antonio Spurs 107-106, a win that eventually delivered New York its first title since 1973. Brunson and Hargitay hugged it out on the floor that night. They crossed paths again this past Monday, when Brunson appeared in the opening segment of the Emmy Awards telecast, which Hargitay hosted. She turned up on that red carpet with her husband and their three kids, daughter Amaya included, in a gown that matched her mother's.

SVU will be stop number two on Brunson's acting run. He's set to make his Saturday Night Live debut on September 26, ahead of the SVU episode.

Fans in NBC's comments section had a field day with the crossover, most of them leaning into the idea of "two captains" sharing a scene, one who calls plays for the Knicks and one who's run Special Victims for nearly three decades. A few used the moment to lobby for an actual Stabler comeback, because SVU fans never really let that go. One commenter admitted they'd never watched an episode of the show but would tune in for this one, which is probably the reaction NBC was fishing for.

No trailer or scene details yet. That'll likely come closer to November 5, when Brunson's badge finally gets tested on screen.
