Jason Sanjay isn't hiding behind his father's shadow, at least not on the promotion trail. At a pre-release event for Sigma in Hyderabad, Vijay's son confirmed that Thalapathy Vijay won't be doing any press for the film, and that the decision is deliberate.
"My father is waiting for the release of Sigma. He won't be promoting my film. I want the promotions to be about the film and not him. I don't want it to overlap," Sanjay said, according to Pinkvilla.
It's a telling line from a debutant with arguably the biggest surname in Tamil cinema right now. Sigma marks Sanjay's first outing behind the camera, and he's written it himself. Sundeep Kishan headlines, with Faria Abdullah, Raju Sundaram, Anbu Thasan, Yog Japee, Sampath Raj, Kiran Konda and Magalakshmi Sudharsanan rounding out the cast. Lyca Productions is bankrolling it, Thaman S has the music.
When asked directly at the event what gift his father gave him ahead of the debut, the question stars usually answer by naming a budget or a crew member, Sanjay didn't play it straight. Fans in the crowd started cheering before he could finish his sentence, and he simply smiled, pointed at them, and said, "All of them, obviously."
Sigma is pitched as an action-adventure comedy built around a lone-wolf protagonist who rejects what's expected of him and goes chasing hidden treasure through a string of heists. Make of that framing what you will, given who's directing it.
The film has already had one release-date shuffle. It was originally slated for July 31 before moving to October 2. That new date briefly set up an awkward clash: Vijay and Trisha Krishnan's Thirupaachi was lined up for a re-release around the same window. According to Pinkvilla, that re-release has since been pushed back, clearing Sigma's runway.
The soundtrack and trailer drop September 18, which will be the first real test of audience appetite outside the fan-event bubble. Sanjay has also said he plans to explore acting once Sigma is out, which means this isn't a one-off experiment behind the camera, it's an opening chapter.
Whether keeping Vijay off the promotional circuit helps or hurts Sigma's visibility is the more interesting question here. Star kids usually lean on the family name during a debut, not ask their fathers to step back. Sanjay's betting that the film can carry its own weight in the two and a half weeks before it hits screens on October 2.
