Jennifer Lawrence Cast In Zach Cregger's The Flood

The Weapons director's next project reunites him with New Line and lands a theatrical date nearly two years out, with the plot kept firmly under wraps.

Zach Cregger doesn't waste time between hits, and now he's got Jennifer Lawrence to prove it.

The Oscar winner will star in The Flood, an original sci-fi thriller written and directed by Cregger, with Warner Bros.' New Line division producing. The studio has set a theatrical release for August 11, 2028, and production is expected to begin in Europe in early 2027, according to both TheWrap and The Hollywood Reporter.

What the film is actually about, nobody's saying. TheWrap reported that "plot details are being kept secret," and every outlet covering the deal is working with the same blank page. All we've got is the label: original sci-fi thriller, Cregger's own idea, his script.

The Hollywood Reporter added a wrinkle the other outlets skipped. It reported that New Line picked up The Flood out of turnaround from Netflix earlier this year, meaning the project had a life at the streamer before landing at Warner Bros. Nobody's detailed why the move happened, and the other sources don't mention it at all.

A reunion two years in the making

This is Cregger's second go-round with the New Line and Warner Bros. Team following Weapons, his 2025 hit that made $270 million worldwide, per TheWrap. He name-checked studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy directly. "Mike, Pam and the whole Warner Bros./New Line team were an absolute dream to collaborate with on Weapons, and I couldn't be happier to dive in with them again," Cregger said in a statement carried by Just Jared and TheWrap. "Jennifer is one of a kind, and I'm beyond excited to see her in this role."

De Luca and Abdy returned the compliment, calling Lawrence "one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today" and saying they're thrilled to have her "at the center of Zach's bold and wholly original vision." Amblin Entertainment is producing alongside Cregger's regular partners Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.

Cregger's run right now is hard to argue with. Barbarian sits at 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, Weapons at 93%, and his Resident Evil reboot, out just this year, has landed at 96%. He also produced Companion, at 93%. Three horror-adjacent swings, three big scores.

Lawrence, meanwhile, isn't exactly known for saying yes often. The Hollywood Reporter called her casting a coup for that reason. She's coming off a Golden Globe nomination for the postpartum drama Die My Love and has What Happens at Night, a Martin Scorsese film opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, still to come.

So the pieces are in place: a director on an unbroken hot streak, an actress who picks her spots carefully, and a studio eager for round two. What's missing is everything else. No genre specifics beyond "sci-fi thriller," no supporting cast, no title explanation. Cameras roll in Europe sometime in early 2027, which gives everyone involved a full year to keep the secret before anyone's forced to explain what The Flood actually is.
