Jessica Lange is back on Miss Robichaux's turf, and she's brought her whole résumé with her.

FX and Hulu put out the full trailer for American Horror Story: 13 on Thursday morning, and Ryan Murphy's long-running anthology is doing something it hasn't really tried before. Instead of a fresh setting, the show is folding its old ones into each other. Lange, 77, opens the trailer as Elsa Mars from Freak Show, welcoming viewers to "the greatest show on Earth." From there the trailer cuts through her past roles, Constance Langdon from Murder House and Fiona Goode from Coven among them. Just Jared reported she's playing four characters this season, adding Sister Jude from Asylum to that list. TheWrap's breakdown of the trailer counted three. Either way, nobody else in AHS history gets that kind of real estate.

She's not alone in doing double, triple or quadruple duty. Sarah Paulson appears as Cordelia Goode, the reigning Supreme from Coven, and reportedly also turns up as Wilhemina Venable from Apocalypse, Ally Mayfair-Richards from Cult, Lana Winters from Asylum and Sally McKenna from Hotel, according to TheWrap. Evan Peters is back as James March from Hotel, Tate Langdon from Murder House and Kai Anderson from Cult. In the trailer, his March character tells someone offscreen it's "witch-hunting season," and Paulson's Cordelia warns of "something wicked this way comes."

Why it's built like this

Murphy laid out the thinking to Entertainment Tonight before the trailer dropped. "Everybody thinks it's a Coven season, and it's not, it's all the seasons," he said, comparing the approach to The Avengers. "They all come together to defeat the ultimate evil." He also said several actors who'd turned down past seasons signed on once they heard the pitch.

The returning ensemble is enormous. Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, Jamie Brewer, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett and Billie Lourd are all back, per Just Jared and TheWrap. Bates plays Delphine LaLaurie again, John Carroll Lynch returns as Twisty the Clown, and Mena Suvari is back as Elizabeth Short. JoBlo also lists Madison Montgomery, Marie Laveau, Rubber Man and Kai Anderson among the confirmed returns, and points to episode titles like "The Return of Devil's Night" and "The Baddest Witch of Them All" as clues to how the seasons collide. New faces this time include John Waters, Joey Pollari, Paul Anthony Kelly, Avantika Vandanapu and Alex Consani. Ariana Grande was originally attached to the cast but has since dropped out, according to Just Jared, which didn't specify why.

The season runs 13 episodes at roughly 30 minutes apiece, with three episodes landing at the premiere and the finale timed to arrive just before Halloween, per JoBlo. American Horror Story: 13 starts Thursday, September 24, at 9 p.m. ET on FX and Hulu. What's still unclear, beyond Lange's exact character count, is how much of that Halloween-week finale ties this whole crossover together.
