Kamal Haasan doesn't hand out compliments for free, so when the team behind Bethlehem Kudumba Unit walked into his space this week, it meant something. The film's distribution team shared a video of the meeting on social media, Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju's team led by producer Fahadh Faasil posing with the veteran star after a warm, unhurried chat. Good timing too. The same day, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit crossed ₹250 crore worldwide, according to Track Tollywood, becoming only the third Malayalam film ever to get there, after Empuraan and Lokah.

That's the company this film keeps now.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit released on August 21 in Malayalam and picked up Tamil and Telugu versions on September 4, and two weeks in, it hasn't slowed down. The pace, per trade tracking, is unusual. Most films fall off after the opening fortnight. This one hasn't, and the dubbed versions arriving late are adding to an already stacked worldwide number rather than propping up a fading one.

In Kerala specifically, the film is closing in on Vaazha 2, which sits around ₹130 crore gross in the state, per Track Tollywood. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit was expected to touch the ₹110 crore range in Kerala on the day the news broke, and the outlet reported the film is now being talked about as a potential ₹150 crore grosser there. No Malayalam film has hit that number in the state before. If it happens, it rewrites the ceiling, not just the leaderboard.

The film itself is a small story carrying a lot of weight. Ashley moves to Angamaly with her family and falls for her older neighbour Justin, a caterer who shares her love of music. Their families object to the age gap, they separate, she goes to Ireland. Years later they meet again at a wedding, realise neither of them has actually moved on, and decide to marry anyway, parental objections included. Girish AD directs, co-writing with Kiran Josey, and the producing trio of Fahadh Faasil, Dileesh Pothan and Syam Pushkaran back it under three banners together.

Kamal Haasan, for his part, is between big things. He was last seen as Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker in Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, and he's got a stacked runway ahead: a gritty action thriller with SU Arun Kumar for Raaj Kamal Films International, a Rajinikanth reunion tentatively called KHxRK under Nelson Dilipkumar, and Kalki 2 alongside Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan. A courtesy call to a Malayalam hit's team isn't going to move any of those needles. But it says something about where Bethlehem Kudumba Unit now sits in the industry's attention, that the biggest name in the room went out of his way to show up.

The number to watch next is Kerala's ₹150 crore mark. If the film gets there, Mollywood has a new record, and a rom-com without a single star of Haasan's wattage will be the one holding it.
