Daayra got its send-off on September 17, the night before it opens in theatres, and the guest list read like a proper industry roll call.

Meghna Gulzar, the National Award-winning director behind the film, showed up in a salt-and-pepper look, her husband Govind Sandhu by her side in traditional grey. Producer Jayantilal Gada was there. So was Siddharth Roy Kapur, wearing his director hat for the evening rather than his producer one.

But the real draw was the film's two leads.

Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran arrived together and worked the red carpet the way headliners do, cameras trailing them from the car door to the step-and-repeat. It's their first big joint appearance for the film in this stretch of promotions, and it comes right as Daayra's marketing hits its final push before Friday.

Gulzar has built a career on stories that sit close to real events and real institutions, and Daayra's title alone (loosely, "circle" or "cycle") suggests she's not straying from that instinct. Beyond the screening buzz, plot details are still being held close by the studio, which is standard practice for a Gulzar release. Trade watchers will be parsing early word-of-mouth out of Wednesday night's screening for clues on how the opening weekend shapes up.

The timing is tight. A screening the night before release doesn't leave much room for reviews to shape opening-day footfalls, which is either a sign of confidence from the makers or simply how the release calendar landed this time. Either way, by Friday morning the conversation shifts from red-carpet outfits to box office numbers, and that's the number that actually decides how this week goes for Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran.

For now, the screening has done its job. It's put the film back in the news cycle a day before it needed to be there, with a cast that showed up in force and a director whose past work gives this one enough curiosity to carry it into opening weekend.
