Aatish Kapadia, who built his name on television comedies like Khichdi and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, is reportedly set to direct Kareena Kapoor Khan in her next project under Bhansali Productions. Filmfare broke the news as an exclusive, and as of now it hasn't been confirmed by either Kapoor Khan, Kapadia, or the banner itself.

If it holds up, the pairing is an odd one on paper. Kapadia's entire career has run on dialogue, timing, and middle-class domestic comedy, down to his one theatrical credit, Khichdi: The Movie, in 2010. Bhansali Productions runs on something else entirely, period scale, operatic grief, the kind of frame where a single shot costs what a Kapadia episode budget probably didn't.

But that's the point of the arrangement, per Filmfare's report. Sanjay Leela Bhansali isn't expected to direct this one himself. He's backing it as producer, which is a model his banner has leaned on before, putting his resources behind a director with a distinct voice while keeping a hand on how the film looks and plays. Plot and genre are still under wraps. So is a shooting timeline, though the film is expected to enter pre-production only after Bhansali finishes directing Love & War, his Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal project currently in the works.

The bigger story here, if you've followed Kareena Kapoor Khan's career long enough, is what this would mean after the one that got away.

Back in 2013, Bhansali had wanted her opposite Ranveer Singh in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. He'd confirmed the casting himself, telling Hindustan Times at the time that the two of them had wanted to work together for a while and that he was thrilled it was finally happening. It didn't happen. Contractual disagreements and a scheduling clash pulled Kapoor Khan out days before the film went on floors, and the part of Leela went to Deepika Padukone instead, in what became one of the bigger hits of her career.

Thirteen years on, a Kareena Kapoor Khan and Bhansali Productions collaboration finally landing, even at arm's length with Bhansali producing rather than directing, closes a loop the industry has talked about for over a decade.

What's still missing is almost everything that would make this official. No cast list beyond Kapoor Khan, no crew, no shoot dates, no studio confirmation. Filmfare's report leaves the collaboration at the reported stage, and until Bhansali Productions or Kapoor Khan's team put out a statement, it stays there. The next marker to watch for is whether anything moves once Love & War wraps and Bhansali's calendar actually clears.
