In a recent interview, Kate Winslet asserts that the "door" from the iconic Titanic "door" scene might not have actually been a door. Since the release of the film, a lot of people have been wondering: Couldn't Rose (Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) have clutched to the wooden piece and floated until assistance arrived?
Focussing on the controversy, Winslet claimed that what the fans refer to as a "door" was actually the fragment of a ship's bannister during a recent appearance on the Australian program The Project to promote her film Lee.
The door question, she noted, has been omnipresent in popular culture since the 1997 release of the film, so she had a feeling the interviewer would ask it.

She clarified that she had heard these enquiries a lot and was a little taken aback by the fact that people were mistaken, so she decided to end the conversation. The Oscar winner stated, "I assumed that after he asked the Titanic question, he would ask me about the door. I was fully aware of it. However, it's fascinating to note that people continue to refer to it as a door. In fact, it wasn't a door at all.
For many years, viewers have been amused by the controversial subject of whether Jack and Rose could both fit on the piece of wreckage rather than perish with the Titanic. In order to determine whether there were any ways that both characters may have floated on the wreckage, Titanic director James Cameron even ordered scientific research on the subject. Stuntmen modelled four distinct scenarios, searching for different debris positions.
However, he concluded that Jack wouldn't jeopardise Rose's safety by doing anything too daring at that time.
She further said, "It's a piece of banister, like stairway or something, that had broken off. Who knows if [DiCaprio] could've [fit] on there or not. Honestly, I don't have any insights here that anyone else hasn't already tried to figure out."
Kate Winslet joked earlier this year that Leonardo DiCaprio is probably past the whole "door" question phase and even implied that he may have more of "PTSD" as a result of being questioned about the scene so much. Winslet was also able to give Josh Horowitz some more behind-the-scenes information, like the fact that the well-known sequence was filmed in a tank filled with waist-deep water.
Throughout the whole filming process, the actors and crew had to put up with the constant sound of flowing water. As she stated, the water level was so low that she was able to get up, move to the tank's edge, and then climb back up onto the bannister piece to continue filming in between takes.
