The 68-year-old pop icon shared hotel-room footage of the trio dancing to Danceteria Afterhours hours after unnamed sources claimed she looked disoriented backstage.
Madonna took home seven trophies at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, including Artist of the Year, pushing her career total to 27. A few hours later, she was in a hotel room with Charli XCX and Julia Garner, all three throwing themselves around a bed to "Danceteria Afterhours," the track Madonna and Charli performed together earlier that evening.
Madonna posted the clip herself. In it, Charli XCX starts the dancing beside the bed before climbing onto it, Madonna joins her mid-frame, and Garner flips her hair and throws her arms up while their entourage watches from the side of the room. It's loose, unpolished, exactly the kind of footage that reads as a real afterparty rather than a staged one.
Earlier in the night, Madonna opened the VMAs for the first time in 23 years, running through "Bring Your Love" with Sabrina Carpenter before Charli XCX came out for their joint number. Sombr and Seth Rogen also showed up during that set, according to ABC News.
But the hotel video landed against a messier backdrop. OK! Magazine, citing sources who spoke to Rob Shuter's newsletter Naughty But Nice, reported that Madonna's backstage behavior worried people around her that night. One source described her as looking "confused, unsure, and at moments like she didn't quite know where she was," and insisted this wasn't the singer being difficult on purpose.
According to that same reporting, a 15-minute delay to the ceremony, caused by a football broadcast running long, threw Madonna off badly. "She was ready and then suddenly furious," one source claimed. "After that, everything seemed to unravel."
Other sources quoted by Shuter alleged that Madonna's team restricted access backstage and that she looked "flushed and fuzzy," wobbling as she moved to accept her awards. "People who have worked around her for years had never seen her like this," one insider said, adding that this felt different from Madonna simply being demanding or unpredictable.
None of this is confirmed by Madonna or her camp, and none of the sources are named. It sits uneasily next to a night that, on paper, was one of her biggest wins in years, and against a hotel-room video where she looks entirely in command of the room, laughing, dancing, lip-syncing without missing a beat.
Whether the two accounts describe the same person on the same night is the open question here. Nobody involved has addressed the backstage reports directly, and until Madonna or her representatives do, this stays exactly what it is: anonymous claims running parallel to a very public celebration.
