The pop veteran took Artist of the Year for Confessions II at Sunday's ceremony, tying the haul she set with Ray of Light back in 1998, while BTS beat Taylor Swift for Song of the Year.
Twenty-eight years after Ray of Light won her six Moon Persons, Madonna went one better on Sunday night. She walked away from the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with seven, including Artist of the Year, for Confessions II, the sequel to her 2005 album. Deadline called it "1998 all over again," and the numbers back that up almost exactly.
The ceremony ran live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles with Snoop Dogg hosting, and Madonna had led the nominations going in with 13, well ahead of Taylor Swift's 11, according to Just Jared's tally. She converted most of that lead into hardware. Confessions II picked up Best Dance, Best Direction and Best Art Direction among its wins, and her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter, "Bring Your Love," landed Best Collaboration on top of that.
Taylor Swift didn't leave empty-handed. "The Fate of Ophelia" won Video of the Year, and "Opalite" took Best Direction in the video category, two competitive wins on a night where the MTV Artist Director Honors also went her way as a separate, non-competitive prize.
But Song of the Year didn't go to either of them. BTS won that category for "Swim," beating out a field that included Ella Langley, PinkPantheress and RAYE, and the group added two more wins elsewhere, taking their night's total to three, per Just Jared's list.
The Best New Artist race went to Sienna Spiro, edging out a crowded field that included CORTIS, Malcolm Todd and Stella Lefty. And in the night's biggest legacy moment outside the Madonna narrative, Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, a category that usually sits with active pop stars rather than a band whose frontman died more than three decades ago.
Elsewhere the list read like a snapshot of where pop is right now. Bad Bunny's "NUEVAYoL" took Best Latin. Cardi B, featuring Kehlani on "Safe," won Best Hip-Hop. Bruno Mars picked up Best R&B for "I Just Might." Olivia Rodrigo's "the cure" won Best Alternative, and Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Ella Langley each collected wins in their respective lanes.
What's notable is how thin the margin was at the very top. Between Madonna's seven and Taylor's two, plus BTS's three and Ariana and Sabrina's two apiece, the ceremony ended up looking less like one artist's coronation and more like four or five overlapping ones. Deadline and Just Jared both frame Madonna as the story of the night on raw numbers, and that's fair. Whether Artist of the Year sits comfortably with her rather than with whoever had the bigger cultural year is the argument that'll run through next week's trade columns.
MTV hasn't said where the 2027 ceremony lands yet.
