Mandaadi isn't setting the box office on fire, but it isn't fading either. Two days in, Soori and Suhas's Tamil action drama is sitting on a worldwide total in the range of Rs 11.5 to 12 crore, and trade watchers reckon that's a fair result given how packed the marketplace is right now.

The film opened on September 10 with an India net of Rs 4.75 crore, which worked out to roughly Rs 5.55 crore gross once tax and state splits were factored in. Tamil Nadu carried the bulk of it at Rs 3.95 crore, with Telangana (Rs 51.93 lakh), Andhra Pradesh (Rs 47.80 lakh), Karnataka (Rs 45.15 lakh) and Kerala (Rs 12.79 lakh) making up the rest. Roughly 3,371 shows ran across India on day one, selling around 339,200 tickets. Add in an estimated Rs 1 crore from overseas, and the worldwide opening day tally came to Rs 6.55 crore.

The day two hold

Friday was always going to be tougher, being a working day, and early numbers backed that up. By 2 pm, the film had run 1,182 shows in India and pulled in about Rs 1.02 crore, with trade sources expecting a bump once evening and night shows kicked in. The final estimate for day two put worldwide collections around the Rs 5 crore mark, split roughly as Tamil Nadu Rs 2.50 crore, the Telugu states Rs 1 crore, the rest of India Rs 50 lakh and overseas another Rs 50 lakh.

That's a hold trade circles are calling decent rather than spectacular, helped along by reviews that have been largely positive for Soori and Suhas's performances.

The Rs 150 crore ask

Here's where it gets interesting. Kollywood sources peg Mandaadi's budget at around Rs 70 crore once you count cast and crew fees, production costs and publicity spends. For the film to actually turn a profit, trade pundits say it needs to cross Rs 150 crore gross worldwide, which is a big ask from a film opening in the Rs 6-7 crore zone.

Red Giant Movies is distributing in Tamil Nadu, Mythri Movie Makers is handling the Telugu states, and Sree Gokulam Movies has Kerala. All three will be watching the weekend closely.

Overseas, the film has been squeezed by an unusually stacked slate of Indian titles still running in North America, including Mirzapur The Movie, BKQ, I Am Game, Irumudi, Toxic, Viswanath And Sons and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. That competition is a big reason the overseas numbers have stayed modest so far.

The film stars Mahima Nambiar, Sathyaraj, Mithun, Jai Shankar, Ravindra Vijay, Bala Saravanan and Stunt Siva alongside Soori and Suhas, and is directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi. L Red Kumar and Vetrimaaran produced it under the RS Infotainment banner, with SR Kathir on camera, GV Prakash Kumar composing the score and Pradeep E Ragav editing. Whether it settles into a steady, word-of-mouth-driven run or fades against the competition should become clear once the weekend numbers, including Saturday's, come in.
