Rajinikanth's sequel has smashed Leo's first-week record by roughly ₹100 crore and is now closing in on his own 2.0 as Tamil cinema's biggest grosser ever, according to Track Tollywood.
Seven days in, and Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 has rewritten Tamil cinema's box office record book entirely. The film is tracking at around ₹570 crore gross worldwide for its first week, according to estimates from Track Tollywood, which puts it roughly ₹100 crore ahead of the previous benchmark.
That old record belonged to Vijay's Leo, which had managed close to ₹465 crore-plus in its opening week. Jailer 2 hasn't just edged past it. It's blown past it by a margin that's bigger than most films' entire theatrical runs.
Home turf, then everywhere else
Tamil Nadu alone has delivered more than ₹140 crore in seven days, the biggest first week any film has ever managed in the state, per the report. The timing helped. Dasara holidays meant theatres stayed full through the week, not just on the opening weekend.
But this isn't a Tamil Nadu story alone. The Telugu states have already crossed ₹70 crore, while Karnataka and Kerala are sitting at around ₹60 crore each, numbers the report describes as record-level for a Tamil film in those territories. Even the Hindi version has pulled in more than ₹30 crore across India, which is a solid outcome for a dubbed Tamil release that skipped the national multiplex chains entirely.
Overseas is where Jailer 2 has been operating in a different league from Day 1. The film has collected close to ₹205 crore outside India in its first week alone, a pace the report says no Tamil film has matched before.
Chasing Rajinikanth's own record
Here's the twist. The film Jailer 2 is now chasing is Rajinikanth's own 2.0, which sits at close to ₹700 crore as the highest-grossing Tamil film ever made. With ₹570 crore already banked in week one, that record looks shaky heading into the second week, and Track Tollywood's estimate has Jailer 2 on course for ₹800 crore-plus by the time its run winds down.
Worth flagging that these are first-week estimates, and the final numbers could shift slightly once distributor figures firm up. But the shape of the story isn't going anywhere. A sequel to a film that was already a commercial success has turned into the single biggest opening week Tamil cinema has recorded, across every major market it touched.
The real test now is whether Jailer 2 can hold through its second week without the holiday cushion that powered its first seven days. If it does, 2.0's crown comes off sooner rather than later.
