Two Tamil films, one Friday, and an early scoreboard nobody predicted. Mandaadi, Soori's coastal action drama, is currently ahead of Karthi's Sardar 2 in Tamil Nadu advance bookings, according to Track Tollywood. Both films open on September 10, 2026.
That's the twist. Sardar 2 carries sequel weight, reprising Karthi's dual roles from the 2022 spy thriller that did solid business across the state. Mandaadi has no such history behind it. And yet, going by early ticket sales in its home turf, it's the smaller film pulling ahead first.
The explanation trade watchers are floating comes down to one name: Soori. His recent run in Tamil cinema has built him a fan base that shows up on day one, and that goodwill seems to be converting into pre-release bookings for Mandaadi well before word-of-mouth even enters the picture. Suhas plays the antagonist opposite him, with Mahima Nambiar as the female lead. Mathimaran Puzhugendi directs.
Sardar 2 isn't short on firepower either. P. S. Mithran returns to direct the sequel, Malavika Mohanan joins in a key role, and SJ Suryah steps in as the main antagonist this time. On paper it's the bigger release, and Track Tollywood notes it's still expected to open stronger than Mandaadi once the worldwide numbers are counted, not just Tamil Nadu.
So the early lead doesn't necessarily settle anything. Advance bookings measure appetite going in, not what happens after Friday's shows let out. A sequel with a built-in audience can still open bigger even while trailing a rival in one state's pre-sales, and that's exactly the gap trade analysts are pointing to here.
What actually decides this fight is the usual: reviews, word-of-mouth, and how each film holds through the weekend. A spy thriller sequel and a coastal action drama aren't really fighting for the same seat in a theatre, but they are fighting for the same Friday, and Tamil Nadu audiences will have to pick where they spend their first show money.
Both films get their answer in two days. Until then, the advance counters keep ticking, and for once it's the newcomer setting the pace.
