Mohanlal’s Jailer 2 cameo — reduced to two seconds in the trailer, erased entirely from the final cut, has sparked a rare public reckoning among Malayalam cinema’s creative class. Not over plot or performance, but over the silence that followed. Costume designer Jishad Shamsudeen, who worked on three distinct looks for the actor, broke down in a social media post last week, calling the edits 'completely unnecessary.' His words landed like a dropped mic: not just a fan’s gripe, but a craftsman’s protest.
He claimed he’d walked away from future installments of the franchise, citing loyalty to audiences over box office politics. The backlash was immediate. Social media lit up with memes, debates, and a quiet fury from those who saw it as a betrayal of legacy. But by Thursday morning, Jishad had pivoted.
In a clarifying statement, he said his outburst came from 'sadness,' not anger. 'What I expressed yesterday came purely from the heart of a devoted Lalettan fan,' he wrote. 'As someone who admires him deeply, it was naturally disheartening to see his portions reduced.' He added that he respects the director’s vision.
