Madhya Pradesh's annual scooter giveaway for meritorious students has slipped by five days. What was meant to happen on September 11 is now scheduled for September 16, and the state hasn't picked a venue yet.

More than 7,500 students are in line to get scooters this round, funded through a budget of roughly ₹200 crore. The education department had already started sending out distribution cards to district education officers and joint directors when it pulled the plug at the last moment and pushed the date back. No official reason has been given for the delay.

The eligibility bar has moved too. This year, only students who scored 70% or more in Class 12 qualify. That's a change from the older rule, which let government school students in with 60% marks as long as they topped their own school. Fewer students, tighter cutoff.

Money-wise, the scheme gives eligible students between ₹1 lakh and ₹1.25 lakh to buy a scooter, either petrol or electric. And here's the bit officials are actually excited about. For years, petrol scooters were the obvious pick. Not anymore. Officials handling the distribution say more students are opting for electric scooters than petrol ones this time around, a reversal nobody was predicting a couple of years back.

It's a small data point, but it says something about where things are headed on the ground, away from the usual noise about subsidies and charging points. Students making the call themselves, at scale, tends to move faster than policy.

For now, the state has a number, a date and a budget locked in. What it doesn't have is a location, and with September 16 closing in fast, that's the detail worth watching. Whether the venue announcement comes with any change to the numbers, or whether 7,500 stays the final count, should be clear within days.
