The reveal during 'The Cure' on the opening night of The Unraveled Tour turned out to be the work of designer Hussein Chalayan, revisiting a runway trick from a decade ago.
Olivia Rodrigo opened her third arena tour on Friday night in Hartford, Connecticut, and the moment everyone's replaying isn't a song. It's a dress.
During "The Cure," Rodrigo moved out to the B-stage in the middle of the crowd as fake rain came down over her. The paper-like outer layer she was wearing began dissolving in real time, peeling away to reveal a red lace corseted dress underneath. Fans caught it on video within minutes and it's been doing the rounds since.
Her stylists, Chloe and Chanelle, confirmed the piece came from Hussein Chalayan, the designer known for turning garment construction into performance art. Chalayan posted the clip himself, saying he was "very happy to have designed and developed the melting dress" for the tour, and that it drew from his Spring/Summer 2016 collection, Pasatiempo.
That 2016 show, staged around a Cuba theme, had models standing under a shower as their outfits gave way to reveal something new beneath. A decade on, Chalayan's brought the same idea to an arena stage in front of thousands instead of a seated runway crowd. Different context, same trick, and it still lands.
Rodrigo, 23, is calling this run The Unraveled Tour, a title pulled straight from the repeated "I'm unraveled" line in "The Cure." The setlist runs 23 songs deep, pulling from Sour and Guts alongside nearly the entire track list of her newest record, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So In Love. Two nights in Hartford at PeoplesBank Arena kicked things off, and from here the tour heads to Pittsburgh, then Washington DC, Charlotte and Chicago through October.
What's notable is how far this thing stretches on the calendar. Rodrigo's booked through the middle of 2027, with a long North American run that eventually loops back for extended stints in Los Angeles at the Intuit Dome and in Brooklyn at Barclays Center, both stretched across multiple added dates in January and February. The European leg picks up in March with Stockholm and Amsterdam, then Munich, London, Paris, Milan and Barcelona, with London getting five separate dates across two visits to the O2.
A lot of new dates have been added since the tour was first announced, several of them at venues where Rodrigo's already scheduled to play, which tells you something about how ticket demand's shaping the routing in real time.
Whether the melting dress becomes a recurring bit on every tour stop or stays a one-off Hartford moment isn't confirmed either way. Given how quickly the clip's traveled, don't be surprised if Pittsburgh crowds this week are watching for it too.
