Asur Season 3 is already in production. Arshad Warsi, Barun Sobti, Ridhi Dogra and Anupriya Goenka are all back in their lead roles. The one big absence is behind the camera.

Oni Sen, who directed both previous seasons of the show, has confirmed he's not helming the third. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, he called it a natural stopping point rather than any falling out. "Like meaningful chapters in life, my personal directorial journey with Asur reached its natural conclusion," Sen said. "After pouring everything I had into two seasons, I realized I had given it all, and there was nothing new or fresh left for me to bring to that specific directorial table."

That's a fairly rare thing for a filmmaker to say out loud about a franchise this successful. Asur built a genuine cult following across two seasons, the kind of show people still stop Sen on the street to ask about. "Even today, barely a week goes by without someone stopping me to ask the exact same question with unmatched excitement: 'When is Asur 3 coming out?'" he said.

The answer, going forward, involves a new director. Gaurav Shukla, who wrote and ran the show as showrunner across the first two seasons, moves into the director's chair himself for Season 3. He's co-directing with Shwetabh Varma, an ad filmmaker making his move into the format. Sen says the handover wasn't easy but he's backing the new team fully. "Knowing that Gaurav and Shwetabh are taking the director's chair for the new season fills me with immense comfort and excitement," he said. "They will surely do a great job."

Sen's exit does raise the obvious question of tone. Asur's first two seasons carried a very specific visual and narrative signature, the kind that made it stand out in a crowded thriller space. Whether that survives a change of hands, with a writer-turned-director and an ad filmmaker sharing duties, is something only the finished episodes will answer.

For now, Sen is looking back rather than ahead on this one. He credits the show's writers, cast and crew for what Asur became. "Building Asur across Seasons 1 and 2 was a thrilling, beautiful, and intensely collaborative experience," he said. "Together, we managed to build a world that left a lasting mark on Indian web series history."

He's not short of work elsewhere. Sen's Netflix war drama Operation Safed Sagar, set during the 1999 Kargil conflict and starring Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill, Dia Mirza and Adil Hussain among others, has been drawing praise for how it handles the Air Force personnel at its centre. That success is likely part of why walking away from Asur felt less like a loss and more like moving on.

No release date has been set for Asur Season 3. Ahsaas Channa has also joined the cast, according to earlier Bollywood Hungama reporting, alongside the returning leads. With shooting now underway under Shukla and Varma, the wait is for a first look, and for audiences to decide if the new directorial voice still sounds like Asur.
