A first-time director landing in Netflix's global top ten is not something that happens every week. Dhruv Tripathi's debut feature, Reporting Live, has done exactly that, sitting at No. 6 worldwide and No. 2 among the platform's Top 10 Movies in India, according to numbers from independent tracking outfit Flix Point.

The film stars Parineeti Chopra alongside Deven Bhojani, Adil Hussain, Amol Palekar and Shekhar Suman, an ensemble that leans heavily on character actors rather than a single marquee face carrying the poster. That's unusual for a debutant director's first outing, and it seems to be paying off.

Reporting Live is built around a newsroom, the kind of setting where deadlines never really end and a story worth telling usually comes with a cost attached. The film is reportedly interested in what it takes to chase the truth when powerful people would rather you didn't, and in the compromises that journalists make, or refuse to make, along the way. No plot details beyond that premise have been laid out by the makers.

For Parineeti Chopra, this lands in a year where she's already generating conversation on the series side too. Bollywood Hungama recently reported that producer Siddharth P Malhotra has a second season of her show Shaque in the works, along with a sequel to Ikka, and that the response to her current series has brought in an unusual volume of calls. Reporting Live now gives her a second data point in the same stretch, this time on the film side.

Tripathi himself is coming at this from festival circuits rather than big studio sets. He trained at the London Film School's MA Filmmaking programme and has worked across shorts, documentaries and commercials before this. His earlier short, 10x10ft, picked up Best Screenplay at the Moscow International Short Film Festival and Best Director at the Indian World Film Festival. His other short credit is Intezaar. Reporting Live is his first full-length feature as director, which makes a Top 10 debut, global or otherwise, a reasonable marker to point to.

What Flix Point's numbers don't tell us is how long Reporting Live holds that position, or whether it climbs further once word of mouth catches up with the chart placement. Netflix itself has not issued its own viewership figures for the film, so for now the ranking comes from third-party tracking rather than the platform's internal data. That distinction matters when a number this good is doing a lot of the talking.

The real test comes over the next week or two, when the film either slides down the list the way most titles do, or proves it has staying power beyond an opening surge. Either way, Tripathi has a credible first chapter to build a career on.
