Practical Magic 2 is limping toward the exit in North America. Less than $4 million from closing its theatrical run, the sequel to the 1998 cult classic has now collected $67.3 million domestically — a figure that’s more than $21 million ahead of the original, but still far from a win.
The film, which arrived on September 11 with high hopes, never found its footing. It failed to meet Warner Bros.’ projected $40 million opening weekend, and after a steady decline, it’s now down to fewer than 700 screens. On its fifth three-day frame, it pulled just $1.4 million, a 51.4% drop from the previous week.
That’s not a fade. That’s a funeral procession. The numbers don’t lie: despite outgrossing the first film globally, Practical Magic 2 is unlikely to break even worldwide, given its $75 million budget. It did cross $100 million internationally, making it the franchise’s first global hit.
