The actor reunites with director Vishal Furia for a new horror project, marking his first feature collaboration with the filmmaker behind Chhorii and Maa.
R Madhavan is stepping back into the genre that first defined his edge in Indian cinema — horror. The actor has signed on to star in an untitled feature film directed by Vishal Furia, marking their first full collaboration as director and lead performer. The project reunites Madhavan with a filmmaker whose work in the horror space includes Lapachhapi, Chhorii, and Maa, where Madhavan had a surprise cameo.
This new venture comes after Madhavan’s acclaimed turns in 13B, a cult favorite for its unsettling premise, and Shaitaan, both of which cemented his presence in the supernatural thriller landscape. His return to the genre now signals a deliberate pivot toward atmospheric dread and psychological tension, not just spectacle. Furia, who has built a reputation for crafting layered, folk-infused horror, made no secret of his choice.
Speaking about casting Madhavan, he said, “Madhavan sir was always my first and only choice. I’m stoked that he has come on board and has already started getting into the world of the film.” He went on to call Madhavan the “true OG horror star of the cult classic Indian horror '13B', one of my favourite films of all times.” Furia emphasized the actor’s rare combination of conviction, experience, and deep understanding of serious horror, qualities he believes are essential for pushing the genre forward.
The filmmaker also highlighted the creative synergy they hope to build. “Madhavan sir has years of experience as a writer, director and producer, so it’s really special to have him with us on this film,” Furia said. “Together, we want to create something audiences have never seen before in Indian horror, the kind of fear they will feel in their bones!” The project, produced by Rohit Ranjan under Frostlit Production Limited, is expected to begin shooting in 2027.
This move arrives at a moment when Hindi cinema’s horror revival is gaining momentum. The commercial success of Stree 2 proved that audiences are ready for theatrical scares rooted in folklore, suspense, and performance-driven storytelling. Critics note that Madhavan’s career has long defied typecasting, he’s moved cleanly from romantic dramas like Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein and Tanu Weds Manu to intense character studies such as Vikram Vedha and Rocketry: The Nambi Effect.
His recent role in Dhurandhar further expanded his reach, solidifying his status as one of mainstream cinema’s most reliable and versatile performers. Now, with Furia at the helm, Madhavan is poised to anchor a narrative that blends personal credibility with cinematic ambition. The film’s title, supporting cast, and release window remain unannounced.
But the anticipation is building, not just for the scares, but for what this partnership might mean for the future of Indian horror.
