At a promotional event for Shashank Yeleti's Don't Trouble the Trouble, the Baahubali director admitted he'd rehearsed an answer but held back so it wouldn't hijack headlines meant for the film on stage.
SS Rajamouli had an answer ready. He just didn't want to give it.
At a pre-release event for Shashank Yeleti's Don't Trouble the Trouble on Sunday, the filmmaker was asked the question every Tollywood fan group has been asking for years: is a Rajamouli-Suriya film actually happening? Suriya was sitting right there. Rajamouli was there as a special guest. And instead of playing along, he told the room he'd seen the question coming and had thought about how to respond, but decided against it on the spot.
His reasoning was simple. Say anything definite about a Rajamouli-Suriya project and that becomes the story out of the event, not the film the event was actually built around. Don't Trouble the Trouble needed the spotlight that day, not a rumour mill about a collaboration that doesn't exist yet.
He didn't shut the door on it either. Rajamouli's line was that whenever a Rajamouli-Suriya film does happen, it'll be something worth the wait. No timeline, no project name, no hint at genre. Just an acknowledgment that the idea is out there and that he's not pretending it isn't.
The rest of his comments at the event were less guarded. Rajamouli congratulated Suriya on the actor's recent run, calling the back-to-back success of Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons a "double dhamaka." Two hits in quick succession is the kind of streak that gets a director's attention, and Rajamouli made a point of saying so on stage rather than letting it pass.
He also weighed in on what's coming next for the actor. Suriya's next release is Scene, directed by Jithu Madhavan and co-starring Naslen and Nazriya. Promotional material so far has leaned hard on Suriya playing a police officer, and Rajamouli pointed out that this isn't new territory for the actor, given his history with the Singam franchise. But he framed Scene's version differently, describing the character as a more contemporary, stylish take on the cop role rather than a repeat of what audiences have already seen from Suriya in uniform.
Scene is scheduled for a November release, and Rajamouli's comments add to the pre-release chatter building around it, coming as they do from one of Indian cinema's biggest names rather than a routine trade quote.
As for the Rajamouli-Suriya question itself, nothing has changed on paper. No project has been announced, no dates floated, no script confirmed. What's changed is that Rajamouli has now said, in public, that he's thought about the answer and is choosing to sit on it. That's not nothing. Whether it turns into an actual film is a different conversation, and one that neither man seems ready to have yet.
