Sun Pictures put out a new clip from Jailer 2 on Sunday, and it's doing exactly what a four-days-to-release promo is supposed to do. It's got Rajinikanth, as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, delivering a line with his trademark drawl and a threat baked into every syllable.

"If you try to tell anyone that you saw me at a tea shop, you would be alive when you open your mouth but not as you say it. Did you understand?" he says to what looks like a group that's just spotted him somewhere he shouldn't be. It's vintage Rajini menace, half smile, half warning. The clip then cuts to Suraj Venjaramoodu's character stepping out of a car, followed by gunfire breaking out in what looks like an indoor shootout.

Sun Pictures and Kalanithi Maran's team still haven't officially confirmed what Suraj Venjaramoodu is playing in this film. But the internet has already decided. Going by this clip and the scattered glimpses before it, fan speculation has settled on him being one of the film's main antagonists. Nothing official on that yet, so treat it as chatter until the studio says otherwise.

What isn't speculation is the size of this cast. Nelson's sequel brings back Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Yogi Babu, Shivarajkumar, Mohanlal, Vinayakan and Jaffer Sadiq from the first film. On top of that, Sun Pictures has stacked in SJ Suryah, Apeksha Porwal, Mithun Chakraborty, Vijay Sethupathi, Vidya Balan, Anna Rajan, Hakkim Shah, Bagavathi Perumal, Meghana Raj, Shamna Kasim and Jatin Sarna. That's close to twenty recognisable names sharing screen time with a Superstar who's never exactly needed company at the box office.

A wide IMAX push, a familiar crew

Jailer 2 is set to release in theatres on October 15, and this time it's going wide on IMAX screens too, reportedly the first time a Rajinikanth film has got that kind of release. For a star whose fan base treats first-day-first-show like a festival, that's a meaningful upgrade in how the film gets consumed on opening weekend.

Behind the camera, Nelson has kept almost the entire technical team from the original Jailer intact. Anirudh returns on music, Vijay Karthik Kannan is back as cinematographer, R Nirmal edits, DRK Kiran handles art direction, and Pallavi Singh and Muthul Hafeez are back on costumes. The one new addition is stunt director Chethan D'Souza, which, going by this latest clip's gunfire sequence, suggests the action choreography is getting a fresh hand this time around.

Online, the soundtrack is already running hot, with reports of the Jailer 2 album crossing 100 million streams and landing on Spotify's higher club tiers well before release. Combine that with trailer memes doing the rounds and a Hindi version apparently being marketed as Rajini: The Jailer 2, and the noise around this film has been building steadily for weeks.

Four days out, Sun Pictures still has a few cards left to play before the Wednesday release, including whatever's left of the promotional push and any pre-release event the trade's been buzzing about. Whether that includes a dedicated fan show remains to be confirmed.
