Varanasi woke up to bikes and marigolds on Thursday. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 76th birthday, and the centrepiece wasn't a speech. It was 250 motorcycles.

Five hundred young riders set off from Varanasi, Modi's constituency and what CM Yogi called his karmabhoomi, on a route that ends in Vadnagar, Gujarat, his birthplace. The journey runs 20 days, wrapping on October 7. That date isn't random. It's exactly 25 years since Modi took oath as Gujarat's chief minister back in 2001, and the whole event was built around that milestone.

Before the flag-off, the leaders visited an exhibition at the Rudraksha International Cooperation and Convention Centre titled '25 years of Janseva se Rashtra Seva,' tracing Modi's run from Gandhinagar to Delhi. A short film on government initiatives played for the assembled crowd. Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union minister Chirag Paswan were also present, according to posts shared by the UP BJP.

CM Yogi laid out the logistics in some detail. Riders will cover roughly 100 kilometres a day and stop for four programmes en route. Ten separate legs will start from Vadnagar itself, carrying river water from Gujarat to be offered to Baba Vishwanath in Kashi, while ten more will leave Varanasi carrying water from Uttar Pradesh's rivers, bound for Lord Hatkeshwar's temple in Vadnagar. It's a two-way ritual exchange dressed up as a fitness ride, and CM Yogi framed it as living out 'Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat.'

The speech itself ran long on numbers. Yogi credited the Modi government with housing for 4 crore families, toilets in 12 crore households, gas connections reaching 11 crore families under Ujjwala, and health cover for 60 crore people through Ayushman Bharat. He also invoked Digital India and Stand-Up India as evidence of a shift from job-seeking youth to job-creating ones, and noted that free rations have continued for 80 crore people since the pandemic. None of these figures were independently verified for this report, they're the government's own framing of its record, offered on the Prime Minister's birthday by his party's own leadership.

What happens over the next 20 days is straightforward enough to track. The bikes are moving, the dates are fixed, and October 7 is when Varanasi and Vadnagar are meant to meet somewhere in the middle, water bottles and all.
