Ram Charan is back in transformation mode, and this time the goal is to get smaller, not bigger. According to Filmfare, the actor has begun working with his trainer on a customised diet and workout plan for RC17, his 17th film, with a target of dropping close to 8 kg before the cameras start rolling.
That's still some weeks away. The film is expected to go on floors in the last week of November, maybe a touch later, which gives Charan a decent runway to get into shape. Filmfare reports the script and pre-production are largely locked, so once the diet and workouts are done, the shoot itself should move fast.
This isn't new territory for him. Charan has built a bit of a reputation for physically reworking himself for a role and then doing it again for the next one. For RRR, he trained under celebrity fitness coach Rakesh Udiyar to get lean and cut, the kind of high-definition physique built on weight training, boxing, running and swimming rather than raw bulk. It worked. Alluri Sitarama Raju needed a body that looked carved, not stacked, and that's what he showed up with.
Peddi asked for the opposite. For that sports action drama, Charan piled on muscle to play a traditional pehalwan, going in for a thick beard, long hair and a genuinely bulky frame instead of the gym-sculpted look he's known for. The rugged wrestler image did a lot of heavy lifting for the film's pre-release buzz, quite literally.
A reunion eleven years in the making
RC17 puts Charan back opposite Sukumar for the first time since Rangasthalam, and expectations are already running high because of it. That film remains one of the more loved entries in both their filmographies, and a reunion this long after was always going to draw attention the moment it was confirmed.
The project is being produced jointly by Mythri Movie Makers and Sukumar Writings, with Devi Sri Prasad composing the music. Filmfare describes it as a large-scale commercial action entertainer, the sort of film that leans on mass appeal while still carrying the emotional beats Sukumar tends to write into his scripts. Given his track record with Pushpa and Rangasthalam itself, nobody's expecting a straightforward, no-frills action film here.
What exactly the new physique is for, whether it's a leaner action look or something else entirely tied to the character, hasn't been detailed yet. Charan's team hasn't put out specifics on the role itself, and with the shoot still weeks out, that's likely to stay under wraps for now.
For the moment, the story is the gym, not the set. Charan gets his weeks to hit the target, and RC17 gets its November start date, assuming nothing pushes it further down the calendar.
