Krishna Mukerji, mother of actress Rani Mukerji, died on Tuesday afternoon at the age of 75. The news came in the form of a short statement that both the Mukerji family and Yash Raj Films put out within hours of each other, word for word identical, asking fans and the press to give the family space.
"With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji's mother, Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon," the statement read. "The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support, and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief."
Filmfare reported that the statement came from the family directly. Bollywood Bubble attributed the confirmation to Yash Raj Films, which has long housed Rani's closest professional relationships going back to Mujhse Dosti Karoge and Veer-Zaara. Either way, the wording that reached the public was the same, and neither outlet has offered further detail on the cause of death or on funeral arrangements.
Krishna Mukerji's own footprint in the industry predates her daughter's. She worked as a playback singer in her earlier years, with credits that include Haiwan and Teesri Ankh, at a time when the Mukerji surname was already known in Hindi cinema through Rani's father, cinematographer Ram Mukerji, and her aunt, actress Debashree Roy's contemporaries in the extended film family.
Rani has spoken about her mother in interviews before, describing her as a constant presence rather than a background figure. "For me, my mother has been one such character who has been with me right from my childhood," she had said.
