The title and first look of Rashmika Mandanna's M.S. Subbulakshmi biopic drop today at 5:15 pm, but the more interesting detail buried in the announcement is the release window. Trade sources quoted by Filmibeat Kannada say the film is being eyed for a summer 2027 release, likely around March, though nothing is locked in until the makers confirm it themselves.
The launch event is happening in Chennai and the date isn't a coincidence. It falls on M.S. Subbulakshmi's 110th birth anniversary, and the makers have built the whole rollout around that. Kamal Haasan is attending as chief guest, which tells you how much weight the production is putting behind this one.
The technical side is already locked. Gautham Tinnanuri is directing, Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music, and the film is being produced under the Geetha Arts, Rockline Entertainments and Bunny Vas Works banners, with Allu Aravind, Rockline Venkatesh and Bunny Vas backing it. That's a serious combination of names for what is a prestige biopic on one of Carnatic music's most towering figures.
A rom-com star, a classical legend
Rashmika called playing Subbulakshmi a "huge honour" in an Instagram post ahead of the reveal, and the makers have gone with the tagline "MS – A Legacy On Screen" on their promotional posters, along with a line that translates roughly to "that grand journey begins today." It signals a reverent, old-world treatment rather than anything flashy.
The first look will go up simultaneously on Rashmika's Instagram and X, and also get shared across Geetha Arts, Tinnanuri, Anirudh Ravichander, Rockline Entertainments and Bunny Vas Works accounts. Expect the full title, production credits and possibly a release timeframe to land the moment the poster is out.
The film is expected to be primarily in Tamil and Telugu, with Kannada and Hindi versions likely to follow, though the official language line-up is only expected once the title is unveiled. For Kannada audiences specifically, Rashmika headlining a pan-India biopic of this scale is being read as a big moment, given she's from Virajpet in Kodagu.
There's also the obvious question hanging over the whole thing, and Filmibeat Kannada's report doesn't shy away from it. Rashmika has built her career largely on romantic leads. Whether she can carry a role as demanding and revered as Subbulakshmi is something nobody can answer from a poster. That verdict waits for a trailer, at minimum.
For now, the countdown is to this evening's reveal in Chennai. After that, the wait shifts to whether that March 2027 window actually holds.
