The crime drama was officially launched in Hyderabad on Sunday with a title video that rebrands Ravi Teja as 'The Crime Maharaja' for a cast including Priyanka Mohan and Anaswara Rajan.
Ravi Teja has a title for his next film, and it is not the one you would expect from Mass Maharaja. Thulabharam, directed by Vivek Athreya, was launched on Sunday at a private studio in Hyderabad, with the makers calling it a crime-based entertainer that pushes the star into territory he has not tried before.
This is Ravi Teja's first film with Athreya, the director known for titles that sound distinctly Telugu and still land as clever, and it arrives right after the success of Irumudi. The pairing had been rumoured for months. Now it is official, and the title documentary released at the launch leans hard into reinvention, branding this version of the star 'The Crime Maharaja' under a banner the makers are calling Nava Ravitejamu, which loosely translates to a new Ravi Teja.
The cast is stacked for a crime drama. Priyanka Mohan plays Krishnaveni, Anaswara Rajan is Sound, Anil Karella is Jadeja, Ravi Anthony is Robin, Tharun Bhascker is Devaraj and JD Chakravarthy plays Sivaji Rao. That is a lot of named characters for one announcement video, and it hints at something more layered than a straight mass vehicle.
Laxman and Srini Rao are producing under the Bridge Productions banner. On the technical side, Vivek Sagar, a regular Athreya collaborator, composes the music. Theni Eswar is behind the camera, Raviteja Girijala edits and GM Sekhar handles the art direction.
The announcement video itself has become a talking point on its own. Athreya built it as a kind of mini-documentary walking through how the team arrived at Thulabharam, and that process, part chaos and part deliberate craft by his own description, is exactly the sort of thing fans have come to expect from him. Social media chatter around the launch has leaned into exactly that: people pointing to his run of titles as proof of a filmmaker who treats naming a film as seriously as writing it.
What has not been revealed yet is a shooting schedule or a release date. Cinema Express reports that filming is set to begin shortly, with more details expected in the coming days, but nothing beyond that has been locked down publicly.
For Ravi Teja, this is his second big announcement in quick succession after Irumudi, and it puts him in unfamiliar company tonally. For Athreya, it is the biggest star he has worked with yet. Whether The Crime Maharaja tagline is more than a clever launch-video flourish will only become clear once the film actually starts rolling.
