Ravi Teja’s next is reportedly titled Thulabharam, and it’s not the kind of film fans expect from him. The title — already described as ‘almost locked’, is a rare one in Malayalam cinema, having appeared only twice before in its history, both times in evergreen classics. Now, it’s being resurrected for a Telugu project that’s shaping up to be a genre shift: horror. That’s a first for Ravi Teja, whose recent work has leaned into action-comedy and mass appeal. The film marks his debut collaboration with director Vivek Athreya, known for cerebral thrillers like Brochevarevarura and Saripodhaa Sanivaaram. But this isn’t just a change in tone. It’s a pivot in direction. Athreya had originally pitched the story to Nandamuri Balakrishna, but when that fell through, he reworked it and offered it to Ravi Teja, who signed on after the success of Irumudi. Laxman and Srini are producing, stepping in after Mythri Movie Makers exited the project. The formal launch is expected soon, with shooting set to begin post-launch. No release window has been confirmed yet. And while the title may evoke spiritual or mythic weight, the genre suggests something far more visceral. The real question now? Whether Ravi Teja can carry a horror film without leaning on his usual stunts, and whether audiences will follow.
