Alan Ritchson and Owen Wilson's action-comedy hit theatres on September 11 and pulled in $6.46 million across North America in its opening weekend, per Box Office Mojo. That's good enough for the number four spot domestically, behind The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, both of which are still eating into everything else's oxygen at multiplexes right now.
Overseas, the picture is worse. Runner had a limited international rollout and managed just $35,000, all of it from New Zealand. Add that to the domestic haul and you get a worldwide total sitting at $6.5 million. For a film with two recognisable leads, that's a rough number to wake up to on a Monday.
The budget, going by reports, sits somewhere between $35 million and $45 million. That range hasn't been confirmed by the studio, which makes the exact break-even math a bit fuzzy. But the industry rule of thumb still applies here: a film generally needs to earn about 2.5 times its production cost worldwide to actually turn a profit, once marketing, distribution and theatre cuts are factored in.
Run those numbers and Runner needs somewhere between $87.5 million and $112.5 million globally to get into the black. Right now it's collected less than eight percent of that floor. Even with a generous multi-week hold, that's a mountain, especially with two heavyweight releases still parked in the multiplex and eating into available screens.
The reviews, for what it's worth, aren't the problem. Critics and audiences have been mixed to positive, and the Ritchson-Wilson pairing seems to have landed with the people who did show up. The story follows a former soldier and an unlikely partner racing to deliver medical supplies while a cartel closes in, with a kidnapped girl's life on the line. It's the kind of premise that usually plays fine on word of mouth over a few weekends.
Word of mouth alone won't fix an opening this thin, though. Runner will need international markets to open wider and hold strong through the next month if it wants to climb anywhere close to that break-even range. Whether distributors expand the overseas footprint at all, given how the first weekend went, is the question that decides the next stage of this film's run. For now, it's sitting well behind the pack, and the clock on those multiplex screens keeps ticking.
