The Ambanis threw open Antilia's doors on Monday, September 14, for their annual Ganpati celebration, and half of Bollywood showed up.
Rekha led the veteran contingent in a traditional saree with statement jewellery. Salman Khan kept it low-key in a shirt and jeans, while Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan brought their sons Taimur and Jeh along, Kareena in mustard yellow, Saif in a red kurta and dhoti that did not go unnoticed.
Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani arrived as a unit, him in a plain kurta, her in pink. Sachin Tendulkar turned up with his family too, because Ganpati at Antilia has stopped being just a film industry thing years ago.
The evening's real talking point, though, was Katrina Kaif. She has kept a low profile since the birth of her child, so seeing her out with Vicky Kaushal in a mint green anarkali, minimal makeup, embroidered dupatta, counted as news in itself. Vicky matched her energy in white.
Alia Bhatt went the saree-with-an-off-shoulder-blouse route. Ranbir Kapoor showed up in a blue kurta layered under a heavily embellished jacket, the kind of outfit that photographs better than it probably felt to wear in Mumbai's September humidity.
And then there was Ranveer Singh. He came alone this year, all in white, and worked the paparazzi line with his usual theatrics, big smiles, quick poses, the works. The absence of Deepika Padukone wasn't a mystery. She's expecting the couple's second child, so a solo appearance from Ranveer made sense to anyone tracking the timeline.
Other names in the frame included Anil Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Kajol, Gauri Khan, Suniel Shetty, Ananya Panday, Disha Patani and Varun Dhawan, which is basically a cross-section of three generations of Hindi cinema under one roof.
The Ambani Ganpati has become something of a fixture on the industry calendar at this point, less a party and more a checkpoint. Who shows up together, who skips it, who's visibly pregnant and who isn't. This year it told a small story about Ranveer and Deepika's second pregnancy and a bigger one about Katrina Kaif easing back into public life on her own schedule.
Whether Deepika makes an appearance at any of the other Ganeshotsav functions around the city this week is the thing to watch next. Mumbai's festival season runs another week yet, and Antilia is rarely the only stop.
