Sara Ali Khan is spending Fashion Week in New York, and by her own account, spending it the way she always has, on foot, mostly.

The actor is set to attend the Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2027 runway show and spoke to Lifestyle Asia India about where her style is headed these days. Her answer, in short: away from the loud stuff.

"Minimalistic, monotones, I'm enjoying that," she said, adding that she's already had her fill of "colourful shock and awe" over the years. It's a shift for someone whose red carpet run has leaned bright and maximal more often than not.

Asked about a fashion rule she's abandoned, Sara offered a line that sounds like it belongs on a mood board: "Impress other people, express yourself is my new one." She followed it with a related thought, that clothes should sit on you, not the other way round. "Just don't let the outfit wear you, be yourself in whatever you wear," she said.

Trend-chasing, she made clear, isn't really her language. Comfort is. She said she'd rather stay consistent with who she is than rotate her closet every season.

The wardrobe weak spots

Pressed on where her fashion discipline breaks down, between shoes, bags, jewellery and jackets, Sara didn't pick one. She picked two: winter jackets and tote bags, "depending on where I'm going." And when asked to name a single piece everyone ought to own, she stayed on brand for the evening, naming the Tommy Hilfiger cable-knit as her pick.

Her soundtrack answer tied back to her own New York history rather than anything on the charts. Asked what song matched her outfit for the night, she pointed to her "Columbia school anthem," a nod to her years at Columbia University before she came home to films.

That history also shapes how she sees the city now. A day off, for Sara, isn't museums and landmarks, it's a loop she clearly knows by heart: "Barry's Boot Camp, Whole Foods, Mamo, walking, more walking, some desserts, some more Mamo, then you're too tired for Barry's Boot Camp."

And when asked what's the most "New York" thing she's done on this trip, she brushed off the premise entirely. Having lived there, she said, there's no single defining move, just the ordinary stuff. Taking the subway. Talking to a stranger. Eating pizza on the street.

No release date attached to any of this, no film to plug. Just an actor between projects, back in a city she once called home, walking into a runway show on her own terms.
