Karthi's spy thriller sequel opened well enough on Thursday. By Friday it was in trouble.

Sardar 2 hit theatres on September 10 and pulled in 4.5 crore net in India on day one, per Koimoi's tracking, making it Karthi's fourth-biggest post-COVID opener. Not the number the makers were hoping for given the 2022 original's cult following, but respectable. Day two is where things went sideways. Collections fell to 2.5 crore net, a drop of 45%, with the Tamil version contributing 1.75 crore and the Telugu dub adding 0.7 crore. The film also shed roughly 600 screens between Thursday and Friday.

Here's the number that should worry Prince Pictures and IVY Entertainment more than any single day's total. The original Sardar actually grew 44% on its second day back in 2022. Sardar 2 is doing the opposite, and doing it hard enough that its cumulative two-day haul now sits behind what the first film had banked by the same point. A bigger opening that's turned into a smaller total inside 48 hours is not a trend anyone wants to explain to distributors.

Reviews and rivals both bit

Part of the problem is word of mouth. Reactions to the PS Mithran-directed sequel have been mixed since Thursday, and on social media some viewers have already drawn comparisons to Indian 2, another long-awaited sequel that opened to noise and then faded fast once audiences started talking. That's not a comparison any producer wants attached to their film 48 hours in, fair or not.

The other problem has a name: Mandaadi. Soori's sea-set drama opened alongside Sardar 2 and has been pulling Tamil Nadu audiences who might otherwise have shown up for Karthi's dual-role action outing. With two Tamil releases splitting the same theatres and the same weekend crowd, something had to give, and right now it's Sardar 2's screen count.

The film brings back Rajisha Vijayan from the original alongside new additions S. J. Suryah, Malavika Mohanan and Ashika Ranganath, with Karthi in the dual role that anchored the first instalment. None of that firepower has stopped the slide so far.

What happens over the weekend will decide whether this settles into a respectable multiplex run or turns into a cautionary tale about sequel fatigue. Saturday and Sunday numbers, and whether word of mouth improves enough to slow the fall, will tell the real story. Right now, the trajectory says Sardar 2 needs a very different second weekend than the one its opening day promised.
