Allison Janney won an Emmy Monday night for The Diplomat, and instead of just thanking the Academy, she used her backstage press conference to talk about someone else's ongoing nightmare.

"I honestly can say I think about her every day and think about the loss and what Savannah and her family are going through," the 66-year-old actress told reporters after taking home Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. "I don't think I'm alone too. I think all of America was thinking about her."

That's Savannah Guthrie she's talking about. The Today co-anchor's mother, Nancy Guthrie, has been missing since February 1, when she failed to show up for church services near her Tucson, Arizona home. Seven months on, there's still no resolution.

Guthrie addressed Janney's comments during Tuesday's broadcast, and it clearly got to her.

"I was so touched to see her do that," Guthrie said. "Her moment, her triumph, and for her to sit and just take a moment and think about our family. I never let a moment pass, if I get one, to talk about my mom and how much we miss her and love her."

She went further, describing the toll the last seven months have taken. "My whole family, my sister and my brother and I and all of our extended families, we're in such pain," Guthrie said, according to OK! Magazine's account of the broadcast. "We need help. So thank you, Allison Janney, for remembering us and for giving an opportunity for me to renew that call. We just want our mom home, give her a proper goodbye. That's all."

Co-host Al Roker backed her up on air, telling viewers that Janney "speaks for almost everybody out there in America."

This isn't the first time Guthrie has had to compose herself in front of a camera since February. She stepped away from Today for roughly two months after Nancy's disappearance and didn't return to the anchor desk until April. She's told Hoda Kotb before that coming back to a job built on "joy and lightness" felt strange under the circumstances, but that staying away wasn't an option either, given what the show means to her family.

Guthrie rarely brings up her mother on air outside moments like this one. But the cracks show occasionally. During a September 10 broadcast, discussing an upcoming series of live shows from Ireland, she slipped into the past tense while talking about her mother's heritage. "My mother's family, my mother was Irish, as was her grandmother," she said. "They were from Galway." She's also given at least one interview since the disappearance in which she disclosed previously unreported details about the scene, though she hasn't repeated those specifics on her own broadcast.

In August, Guthrie marked six months since Nancy vanished with an Instagram post asking the public for help. No arrest has been announced and no suspect has been named publicly. For now, the search continues, and so does the wait for whatever comes next.
