Former Chennai police chief A Arun was questioned for over three hours on October 9 by the Tamil Nadu Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the handling of early complaints against R Veeramani, the 84-year-old businessman now facing seven separate POCSO cases. The interrogation took place at a location outside the SIT office, where investigators posed more than 100 questions and recorded Arun’s responses in writing. Arun, an Additional Director General of Police who has been on compulsory wait since last month, was among several senior officers examined. Also questioned were Inspectors General N Kannan and A Radhika, both of whom held key roles during the period when allegations first surfaced. According to reports, Kannan was serving as Coimbatore City Police Commissioner while Arun was Director of the Tamil Nadu Police Academy before being moved out of his post. The probe into their conduct follows revelations that complaints about Veeramani and his associate Shanthi exploiting minor girls had reached senior police officials as early as November 2024. MP Ranjan Kumar, president of the TN Congress Committee’s Scheduled Caste wing, claimed he submitted a formal complaint then, seeking action — but no First Information Report was registered. The case gained renewed attention in October 2025 when a child rights activist handed a pen drive containing a video allegedly showing the sexual assault of a minor to the Anti-Vice Squad of the Greater Chennai Police. Initially, police filed a closure report in February 2026, but a special POCSO court rejected it and directed further investigation. In response, the Tamil Nadu government constituted an all-woman SIT to look into the allegations of sexual offences against minors and related matters. On October 12, the Greater Chennai Police registered a seventh case against Veeramani under the POCSO Act, based on a survivor’s statement alleging abuse during her childhood. This brings the total number of POCSO cases against him to seven. Veeramani was arrested on August 29 in a prior case involving alleged sexual offences against a minor. His associates, Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Simhan, were also taken into custody. He is Also, accused of abetting the suicide of a minor in 2004. No bail has been granted. The investigation remains ongoing.
