The Tamil Nadu government has officially cleared a major shift in cinema operations, allowing theatres across the state to screen newly released Tamil films up to six times a day — starting as early as 6 AM and running until 2:30 AM the next morning. The order, issued by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, takes effect immediately for all new releases and remains in place for the first week after a film’s debut.

It also applies on weekends, public holidays, and state festival days. This marks a significant expansion from the long-standing limit of four daily shows under the Tamil Nadu Cinemas (Regulation) Rules, 1957. The change follows repeated requests from three key industry bodies: the Tamil Film Active Producers Association, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the Tamil Nadu Theatre and Multiplex Owners Association.

They had formally petitioned the government earlier this year, seeking greater flexibility during peak release windows, particularly around Diwali. In May, the government had already granted an exception allowing five shows a day on special days. Now, that cap has been raised to six, with screenings permitted from 6 AM, a move aimed at meeting fan demand and boosting opening-week performance.

The decision comes amid heightened anticipation for this year’s Diwali slate, which includes Suriya’s Scene, set for release on November 6, and Nayanthara’s Mookuthi Amman 2, scheduled for November 6 as well. Both films had delayed their Tamil Nadu bookings pending clarity on screening hours. The new rules are expected to give them a strong start, especially in urban centres where early-morning audiences have traditionally been active.

While exhibitors had also sought permission to raise ticket prices by up to ₹250, the government’s order does not address pricing, meaning current rates remain unchanged. The move is seen as a direct response to the challenges faced after the tragic incident during the Thunivu release, which led to the suspension of early screenings.

With this update, the state is reinstating the full rhythm of theatrical life, from dawn to late night, for one of its most anticipated release seasons.
