Shanaya Kapoor Is Playing Two Characters in Student of the Year: After Dark — And She’s Already Been Called 'Very Prepared'
Shanaya Kapoor is stepping into a new kind of spotlight — one where she’s not just playing two roles, but becoming two people. The actress has been cast in a double role for the upcoming series Student of the Year: After Dark, and director Reema Maya has confirmed that the preparation was anything but casual.
According to Maya, the team spent weeks building Aditi and Ayesha as fully fleshed-out individuals, not just variations of a single persona. That meant diving deep into their backstories, speech patterns, fashion choices, and emotional triggers. 'It was a lot of clear separation between who Aditi is, who Ayesha is,' Maya said, stressing that each character had distinct motivations and life histories shaping how they moved through the world.
Shanaya, she added, was ‘very prepared’, a phrase that now feels less like praise and more like a quiet acknowledgment of the work involved. This isn’t her first time navigating complex roles. She’s previously held her own in Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan and Tu Yaa Main. But this?
This is different. Two characters. One actor. No shortcuts.
The series, a spin-off of the Student of the Year franchise, is expected to explore darker, more layered narratives than its predecessors. And with Shanaya at the centre, the stakes are higher. The director emphasized that the two roles were approached as separate entities, not as mirrored versions of the same personality.
She spoke of extensive conversations about what shaped each character, their upbringing, relationships, inner conflicts, even the way they dressed and spoke. 'Why does Aditi talk the way she does? Why does she dress the way she does? Why does she feel the way she does?' Maya recalled asking.
Shanaya, according to the director, responded with consistent depth and commitment. The effort wasn’t just about performance, it was about psychological consistency across both identities. The series also features the song ‘Jo Hona Hai Ho Jayega’, composed by Chaar Diwaari and Samad Khan, which brings an experimental edge to the show’s tone.
While no release date has been announced, the project is already generating interest. Shanaya is also working on other projects: JC and the Telugu film Zombie Reddy: NXT LVL. So while fans wait for the first glimpse, one thing’s certain, Shanaya’s not just showing up. She’s arriving ready to disappear into someone else entirely.
