Shanaya Kapoor just gave the internet its cutest piece of franchise trolling in a while. Days before her show Student of the Year: After Dark lands on JioHotstar, she posted a video of herself in a black satin dress for a photoshoot, with the 2012 track 'Shanaya Shanaya' playing underneath. Caption: "had to use this song na."

It's a small joke but it lands. That song exists because of her name, not because of her. Alia Bhatt played Shanaya Singhania in the original Student of the Year, Karan Johar's 2012 campus drama that doubled as Alia's Bollywood launch. The character was the fashionable, popular girl of St. Teresa's, and the track built around her name became one of the film's stickiest bits, the kind of song that outlived the movie in gym playlists and sangeet mixes.

Now a different Shanaya is walking into the same universe, and she clearly knows the irony isn't lost on anyone. Posting that song over her own photoshoot isn't an accident. It's a wink at a coincidence that's followed her name since the franchise first took off, years before she had any plans to act in it herself.

The actual show arrives on November 13. Student of the Year: After Dark takes the campus-romance template of the two films and turns it into a web series, which is its own kind of gamble. The franchise built its identity on glossy college spectacle at feature length. Stretching that into episodic format, with presumably more room for plot and less room for single-song spectacle, is a different proposition entirely.

Shanaya's prep for the role has already generated separate chatter. Director Reema Maya recently said the actor cut her hair and skipped makeup for the part, and that there was, in her words, no pushback on that choice. Read alongside the nostalgia post, it paints a picture of someone trying to signal two things at once: that she's in on the joke of her own casting, and that the show itself isn't just coasting on franchise recall.

Whether JioHotstar's reimagining can replicate even a fraction of the original's cultural footprint is the open question here. The first Student of the Year turned into a launchpad for Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra. After Dark doesn't have to repeat that exact trick, but it does need an identity beyond borrowed nostalgia and a well-timed Instagram post.

November 13 will tell us how much of that nostalgia survives the jump to series.
