Nobody's been signed. That's the short version of what Siddharth P. Malhotra wants everyone to hear about Kamal Aur Meena, his long-gestating Meena Kumari biopic that's had the internet buzzing over a supposed Saif Ali Khan and Triptii Dimri pairing.

Reports had suggested Saif was in advanced talks to play filmmaker Kamal Amrohi, with Triptii Dimri circling the role of Meena Kumari herself. It's the kind of casting that would make sense on paper, given the scale of the project and the two actors' recent runs. But Malhotra isn't confirming any of it.

"Absolutely touched and delighted by the love and interest around Kamal Aur Meena," he said. "But a humble request to the media: please stop the speculation and unconfirmed reports."

He went further, flagging what unchecked rumour can actually cost a production still finding its footing. "Unnecessary conjecture doesn't help the film, the actors or the studios involved," Malhotra said, adding that the cast, the studio and every other detail will come out only once contracts are locked.

A revolving door of names

This isn't the first name to be floated for Meena Kumari. Kiara Advani was reportedly in the running before Triptii Dimri's name entered the conversation, and none of it has ever been confirmed by the team. That pattern, of names surfacing, gaining traction online, then quietly fading without an official word, has basically defined this project's casting cycle so far.

What has been confirmed, going back to the film's original announcement in 2024, is the scope of the research behind it. Malhotra has said the screenplay draws from roughly 2,000 letters and diary entries exchanged between Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi during their marriage, a trove that's meant to anchor the film in the couple's actual correspondence rather than secondhand legend.

The project is a Netflix original and was originally expected to arrive this year. That timeline has clearly slipped. Two years after the announcement, Kamal Aur Meena still hasn't gone on the floors, and now the film doesn't even have a locked cast to point to.

Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi's story, a marriage that ran alongside decades of Hindi cinema's biggest names, is exactly the kind of material that draws speculation the moment a studio attaches itself to it. Every actor whose name gets floated becomes news, confirmed or not.

For now, the only thing Malhotra has actually locked in is a request: let the film's team make its own announcement, on its own schedule. Whether that comes before the year is out, or whether another name gets floated first, is the only real story here right now.
