Siddharth P Malhotra has finally said the words fans of the Meena Kumari biopic have been waiting for: the cast is locked. Who exactly, he isn't saying.

"I have put together my cast. They have said yes," Malhotra told Mid-Day, confirming his leads for Kamal Aur Meena, the film tracing Meena Kumari's relationship with filmmaker Kamal Amrohi. That's it. No names, no photos, no reveal date.

Kiara Advani's name has floated around this project for months as the likely choice to play Meena Kumari, but Malhotra hasn't confirmed or denied it. The actor playing Kamal Amrohi is an even bigger mystery, unnamed and unspeculated on in any reporting so far.

What Malhotra did explain is why casting took this long. This isn't a small biopic you can cast with newcomers and hope the writing carries it. "It's Meena Kumari's story officially. If you don't get stars, you won't be able to mount the film," he said. Fair point. Meena Kumari isn't just a name in Hindi cinema, she's practically a genre unto herself, and a biopic that doesn't land the casting risks becoming a footnote instead of an event.

The real bill comes next

With the actors reportedly in place, Malhotra's next headache is money, and it sounds like a lot of it. He wants to physically rebuild the sets of Pakeezah (1972) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), two films that are shorthand for a kind of cinematic craft nobody really attempts anymore. On top of that, there's the small matter of buying the rights to the songs associated with that era of Meena Kumari's career.

"So, automatically the bar is high," Malhotra said, which might be the most honest thing a director has said about a biopic's budget in a while. Recreating Kamal Amrohi's Pakeezah isn't a matter of a few crores and a good production designer. It's years of design research, and getting the music rights sorted could take its own separate negotiation, possibly its own separate headline down the line.

Bilal Amrohi is producing, which puts the Amrohi family directly behind a film about their own patriarch's most famous romance, on-screen and off. That's a layer of authenticity the film gets almost by default, though it also means Kamal Aur Meena will be read as much as a family's account as a filmmaker's.

For now, Malhotra's public attention is elsewhere. He's busy promoting Shaque: Trust No One, his Netflix series with Parineeti Chopra making her OTT debut, which streams from September 24. Kamal Aur Meena stays in the background, cast quietly locked, financing quietly unresolved, and the names everyone wants still nowhere close to official.
