Dude director Keerthiswaran will helm the bilingual project, which starts filming in November even as Simbu wraps his current Tamil release Arasan.
Simbu is finally crossing over to Telugu, and the production house making it happen is one that already has a track record with Tamil stars.
Sithara Entertainments, the Tollywood banner behind Suriya's Vishwanath and Sons, is set to produce Simbu's first Telugu film. Two Telugu entertainment outlets, Telugu360 and Filmy Focus, reported on Sunday that the project will be directed by Keerthiswaran, who made Dude, and that it will be shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil.
Neither Simbu nor Sithara Entertainments has put out an official statement yet, but both reports say cast and crew are locked and that a formal announcement is coming soon. What's confirmed by the reports is the timeline. Regular shoot starts in November, once Simbu is free from his current Tamil film Arasan.
This isn't Sithara's first rodeo with a Kollywood star looking to widen his footprint. The production house already delivered a hit for Suriya with Vishwanath and Sons and has Karthi's next, directed by Kalyan Shankar, lined up for release next year. Adding Simbu to that list makes Sithara something of a bridge production house between the two industries, at a time when Tamil-Telugu crossovers have become routine rather than a novelty.
For Simbu, a proper Telugu debut has been a long time coming. He's had dubbed versions of his films do reasonably well in Andhra and Telangana over the years, but a film shot for a Telugu audience from the ground up, with a Telugu director at the helm, is a different proposition. Keerthiswaran's Dude gave him a certain kind of credibility in the youth-entertainer space, and pairing that sensibility with Simbu's screen presence is clearly the bet Sithara is making.
The bilingual format also tells you something about ambition here. Simultaneous Telugu-Tamil shoots aren't cheap and they aren't easy to schedule, especially when your lead actor is juggling another release. But they do let a studio hedge its bets across two of the country's biggest film markets without waiting for a dubbed version to trickle out months later.
For now, the details that matter most, the leading lady, the rest of the cast, the technical crew beyond the director, and the title, are all still under wraps. Telugu360 and Filmy Focus both say an official announcement is imminent.
Until Sithara Entertainments or Simbu himself confirms it, treat the specifics as reported rather than settled. But if the November start date holds, Tollywood will have its answer on whether this crossover works well before the film even gets a release date.
