Steven Soderbergh steps in to finish filming on The Batman Part II while Matt Reeves tends to a family matter. The film remains on track for a February 2028 release.
The Batman Part II is back on set — just not with its original director. Matt Reeves has stepped away from principal photography to attend to an ongoing family matter, prompting Warner Bros. And DC Studios to announce a temporary production pause in early October. The studio confirmed Reeves’ absence was due to personal reasons, adding that he has the full support of the company and will return for post-production when ready.
But the film’s momentum couldn’t wait. Enter Steven Soderbergh. The Oscar-winning filmmaker, known for Traffic, Erin Brockovich, and the Ocean’s trilogy, has stepped in to help complete the final weeks of filming. According to sources at Deadline, Variety, and Just Jared, Soderbergh approached Reeves directly, after expressing admiration for his work on the first film.
And offered to assist. DC Studios gave its full backing to the arrangement. The goal, as Soderbergh put it in a statement shared by multiple outlets, is to generate footage that integrates clean with what’s already been shot so Reeves can properly finish his vision. He praised Reeves’ direction as “intentional, specific, and rigorously coherent.” Reeves co-wrote and directed the 2022 original, which grossed $772.8 million globally.
The sequel, now scheduled for release on February 18, 2028, had previously been delayed from October 2026 to October 2027 before being pushed again this June. Robert Pattinson returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman, alongside Colin Farrell as Penguin, Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright. New additions include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham, and Sebastian Koch.
Jayme Lawson, who appeared in the first film, is reprising her role. Filming had resumed in London before the pause. While sources say it’s too early to determine if the stoppage will affect the release date, the shift in leadership during the final stretch of shooting raises questions about continuity.
Yet all parties stress that Reeves remains the creative anchor. Soderbergh isn’t replacing him, he’s finishing what was started. The crew and cast are expected to remain intact. No new scenes are being written.
The focus is purely on execution. The film’s future hinges on Reeves’ return. When he comes back, the real work begins: editing, sound design, visual effects. Until then, the camera rolls under Soderbergh’s watchful eye.
And Gotham waits.
