The Tamil action drama crosses Rs 100 crore domestically after a blockbuster theatrical run and now streams on Netflix from October 8.
Soori’s Mandaadi is officially moving to digital streaming, with Netflix set to premiere the film on October 8, following a successful theatrical run. The Tamil-language action drama, which centers on traditional sailboat races along the Tamil Nadu coast, has emerged as the biggest commercial success of Soori’s career in a leading role.
Directed by Mathimaran Pugazhendhi, Mandaadi traces the journey of Muthukaali, a former boat racer played by Soori, who returns to the sport amid fierce rivalry with Suhas’s character. The film’s large-scale sailing sequences, choreographed by Peter Hein, Dhilip Subbarayan, and Mahesh Mathew, became one of its defining features, blending sport, suspense, and visual spectacle.
The film’s box-office performance has been nothing short of historic. Makers announced on Monday that Mandaadi had grossed over Rs 100 crore in India and Rs 150 crore worldwide — making it the highest-grossing film of Soori’s career as a lead. Its success marks a pivotal moment in his evolution from a staple comedy actor to a bankable action star.
The film also earned praise from industry heavyweights. Kamal Haasan attended a special screening and commended the writing and dialogues, calling the experience memorable for Soori. Vetrimaaran, who helped shepherd Soori’s transition into serious roles through the Viduthalai series, lauded the film’s dedication. Rajinikanth too offered his appreciation.
Produced by Elred Kumar under RS Infotainment, Mandaadi features music by GV Prakash Kumar, cinematography by SR Kathir, and editing by Pradeep E Ragav. Supporting cast includes Mahima Nambiar, Sathyaraj, Mithun Jai Sankar, Ravindra Vijay, Bala Saravanan, and Stun Siva.
With its theatrical run complete, the move to OTT ensures wider access beyond cinema halls. For fans of regional cinema, this shift points to the growing reach of South Indian films in the digital space. The film’s success also signals a strong future for genre-driven stories rooted in local traditions, especially those with physical stakes and cultural authenticity.
October 8 isn’t just a release date. It’s the next chapter for a film that’s already rewritten the rules of what a Soori-led movie can be.
