South Park is calling itself South America now. Not forever, presumably, but for season 29, which lands next week, and the joke is aimed squarely at Donald Trump.

Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced the switch in a statement that read, in full troll mode: "Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of 'South Park' to 'South America.'" Then the real dig. "We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation."

That line about Apple and Google isn't random. Both companies updated their map apps after Trump's August executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, part of a running trade-war spat with Canada. TheWrap reported Trump has also floated renaming New Mexico to New America. Parker and Stone are simply doing to their own show what Trump has been doing to the map.

The Paramount line is its own story. Skydance's merger with Paramount went through this year, and "Capitulation" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. South Park has spent its recent run needling its own corporate bosses as much as it needles Washington, and this fits the pattern.

A second win over the weekend

The name change lands days after South Park picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, its first win in the category since 2013 and its first Emmy at all since that five-win run between 2005 and 2013 ended. The show's official account marked the win with a cartoon of Trump, underwear at his ankles, Emmy statue in hand, captioned "You finally got your Emmy."

The dig has teeth. Trump was nominated twice for an Emmy, both times for NBC's The Apprentice in the outstanding reality competition category, in 2004 and 2005. He lost both times, to CBS's The Amazing Race, and has never let that go, by most accounts.

Season 28 made Trump the show's central antagonist for a full run, so folding him into the season 29 rollout isn't a swerve. It's the same bit, wearing a new hat.

Season 29 premieres September 16 at 10 p.m. ET on Comedy Central, with the episode landing on Paramount+ the following day. Deadline and TheWrap both list the same follow-up dates for new episodes: September 30, October 14, October 28, November 11 and November 25.

Whether the South America gag survives past the premiere or quietly disappears by episode two is the only real question left. Parker and Stone have never been shy about dropping a bit the moment it stops being funny. Given how fresh the Emmy win still is, don't expect them to drop this one anytime soon.
