A body language expert says their gondola ride and hand-holding hint at who's really steering the relationship, even as rumours swirl about a wedding and a religion switch.
Sydney Sweeney and Scooter Braun looked every bit the loved-up couple in Venice this September, gondola ride and all. Turns out that gondola ride is now being read like tea leaves.
According to a report in Irish Star, celebrity body language expert Inbaal Honigman went through photos of the pair at the Venice Film Festival and came away convinced there's something more layered going on beneath the smooching. Her verdict: a low-key tussle over control, with Braun currently ahead but Sweeney not far behind.
"The couple's body language in Venice indicates somewhat of a power struggle, where Scooter Braun currently has the upper hand, but Sydney Sweeney is a strong claimant to the crown," Honigman said, as quoted by Irish Star.
The gondola moment gets a particularly detailed breakdown. Braun's hand resting on Sweeney's knee, Honigman says, is doing double duty, equal parts affection and stake-claiming.
"When they sit in the gondola, his hand is on her knee, which is a controlling gesture, as he is, gently but surely, pinning his actress girlfriend down. It means that he doesn't want to lose her, and that he's making sure she's at his side," she said.
The hand-holding through the streets gets the same treatment. Per Honigman, the way Braun's palm nearly swallows Sweeney's while they walk isn't just romantic, it's a tell.
"When they're seen touring the streets of Venice, Scooter's hand nearly covers all of Sydney's. They're holding hands romantically, but there is no hiding the fact that he is in charge, as his hand is the literal upper hand," she told the outlet.
But Honigman isn't painting Sweeney as a passenger in this. She points to the actress carrying her handbag a little away from her body while they walk side by side, a positioning choice that, in her reading, makes Sweeney visually take up more room and push back against fading into Braun's shadow.
All this comes stacked on top of two other threads doing the rounds: talk of an imminent proposal, with Braun supposedly chartering private jets to keep pace with Sweeney's schedule, and unverified claims that she's set to convert to Judaism, Braun's faith, having grown up in a devout Christian household. None of that has been confirmed by either Sweeney or Braun.
Venice was, on the surface, just another red carpet stop for a couple that photographs well together. Whether Honigman's read on the hand placements holds up is anyone's guess, body language analysis isn't exactly peer-reviewed science. What happens next, presumably, depends less on gondola optics and more on whether that proposal actually materialises.
