The Netflix special, written after Das lost his voice ahead of filming, makes him the first Indian performer to land three International Emmy nominations.
Vir Das just made history at the International Emmys, again. His new Netflix special, Vir Das: Fool Volume, has picked up a nomination in the comedy category, and that makes him the first Indian performer to rack up three nominations at the awards.
The run started in 2021 with Vir Das: For India, which got him his first nomination. Two years later, Vir Das: Landing won him the actual Emmy, a first for any Indian comedian. Fool Volume is his fifth Netflix special and now his third to be nominated. Three for three, all Netflix, all his own.
The backstory here is the part worth sitting with. Das lost his voice right before he was due to shoot the special. Instead of pushing the shoot or scrapping the material, he rewrote the whole thing in silence and then performed a lot of it without rehearsal, filming across Mumbai, London and New York. That's an unusual way to build a comedy hour, and it shows up directly in the show's themes, which circle around silence, foolishness, happiness and the business of finding your voice again, literally.
Das seems fully aware of how odd the arc sounds. "There's something wonderfully strange about being nominated for an International Emmy for a show called Fool Volume," he said. "This special came from a period when I literally lost my voice, so to see something that began in silence travel this far is pretty surreal."
He went on to lay out the three specials like chapters. "For India was the first time I understood that our comedy could find a home on a global stage, Landing gave me an Emmy, and now Fool Volume has brought me back into that conversation." And then the line that's doing the rounds: "Three nominations is something I never imagined when we made the first one, so I'm just going to enjoy the fact that the fool keeps getting louder."
For a comic who built his early international profile on airport lounges and small clubs, this is a genuinely rare streak. Winning once could be a fluke of a strong year. Getting nominated three times across three different specials over five years is a track record, and it puts Das in a category no other Indian stand-up performer currently occupies at these awards.
What happens next is out of his hands for now. The International Emmy winners get announced later this year, and Das will be up against comedy specials from other countries when that call is made. Whether Fool Volume repeats the Landing result or not, the nomination alone locks in the record. He's also set to headline Radio City Music Hall in New York on January 30, 2027, so the international run isn't slowing down regardless of how the Emmy vote goes.
